Manchester City Personalised Football Diary
Fantastic Diary Gifts for Manchester City Fans!
Manchester City FC was originally called West Gorton FC, but changed name to ensure the team would represent the whole of Manchester.
Fans of the Blues cheekily claim that their club is supported by local Mancunians, whilst Manchester United attracts crowds of glory-hunters from other areas. Although the two teams are now bitter foes, they used to enjoy a relatively friendly rivalry. There were no religious divides, which had characterised derbies in other cities, and football fans from Manchester would often watch the games of both clubs. As ticket prices rose, supporters were forced to choose sides and the wealth of United divided the two teams even further. In 2008, Manchester City was taken over by Abu-Dubai United Group Investment and Development Ltd. Overnight, the Blues became the richest football club in the world and City were given a chance to compete more equally with their local rivals.
Our Personalised Manchester City Diaries feature fascinating match reports on some of the best Man City games from the past century. Starting from the month of your choice, these A5 Diaries are a perfect gift for any time of year and for any fan of the Blues.
Diary Highlights
These Personalised Manchester City Diaries incorporate cup finals, promotion and a selection of exciting league matches - including the 3-1 Manchester derby victory of 2006.
Three FA Cup wins are featured in the A5 Diary, beginning with the 2-1 win against Portsmouth FC in the 1934 final. In 1956, the Blues beat Birmingham City 3-1 to claim the trophy and the match became especially famous for two reasons. Firstly, goalkeeper Bert Trautmann completed the game despite breaking his neck, and secondly, Manchester City had used ‘The Revie Plan’ to complete the win. Named after Manchester City player Don Revie, who would be used as a deep centre forward that persistently dropped back into midfield, this tactical plan was inspired by the 6-3 victory of Hungary against England in 1953. It had stunned football audiences and intrigued many British managers.
In 1969, Manchester City beat Leicester 3-1 to win their fourth FA Cup. One year later, the club returned to Wembley Stadium, beating West Bromwich 2-1 in the League Cup final.
In addition to domestic cup wins, the Blues were enjoying mixed success in the league. Although Manchester City FC won two First Division titles, our Diary Gift focuses on four of the club’s most exciting races to promotion. Manchester City guaranteed promotion to the top flight in 1966 and 1985 respectively. The club found themselves in the third tier of English football in 1998, but the Blues quickly fought back. In 1999, Rotherham were beaten 0-1 in the play-off finals to guarantee a place in the Championship. A second consecutive promotion was ensured at the end of the next season, following a convincing 1-4 win against Blackburn Rovers.
