Brief History of Barnsley FC
Barnsley FC was founded as Barnsley St. Peter’s in 1887. The club struggled through financial problems in the early years, but won the FA Cup in 1912, defeating West Bromwich Albion in the final. The Tykes have spent more time in Division Two than any other team in England. The club was denied promotion to the top flight in 1922 due to goal difference and found it difficult to recover from the disappointment. After sliding down the divisions, Barnsley returned to form in the 1990s and clinched promotion to the Premiership in 1997. The club was relegated the following season, but it achieved further success in 2007/2008 with a remarkable FA Cup campaign. The Tykes beat Liverpool 2-1 at Anfield and then knocked out defending champions Chelsea at home, reaching the semi-finals for the first time since 1912. Barnsley were narrowly defeated by Cardiff City, but a trip to Wembley Stadium following the defeat of two Premier League giants had already given the fans reason to celebrate.
Did you know…
Barnsley football club is also known as “The Tykes", which is a colloquial term for Yorkshiremen. The word ‘Tyke’ refers to a small terrier dog that was often used for catching rats. These dogs used to be commonly owned in Yorkshire, so ‘Tyke’ became a nickname for someone who was born and bred in the county.
Home games have been played at Oakwell stadium since 1998. The ground is part of a multi-purpose sports development site, which includes the Barnsley FC Academy and a number of training pitches. When the Tykes fell into administration in 2002, the council helped the club by purchasing the stadium. Barnsley FC was therefore able to stay in the Football League and maintain payments to creditors.
