Brief History of Huddersfield Town FC
Huddersfield Town FC was formed in 1908 and the club entered the Football League in 1910. Nine years later, financial problems threatened the Terriers’ existence. The owners warned fans that a merger with rival Leeds United may be required to keep Huddersfield Town FC afloat, but this proposal was met with predictable outcry. Supporters fought against the possible merger, holding fund raisers and purchasing £1 shares in the club. Their campaigning was eventually successful, as Huddersfield Town remained an independent club.
Despite these off-field distractions, Huddersfield went on to enjoy their most successful decade to date in the 1920s. The Terriers reached the final of the FA Cup in 1920 and they won the competition in 1922. Huddersfield Town had also won promotion to the First Division at the beginning of the decade and the club began to dominate in the league. The Terriers enjoyed an incredible run of three consecutive title wins between 1924 and 1926. Huddersfield Town FC was the first team to win three championships in a row and the club also finished as runners-up in the following two seasons.
Did you know…
Huddersfield Town FC is nicknamed “The Terriers", as this breed of dog was historically popular in Yorkshire. A Terrier dog is featured on the club badge and the popular team mascot is called “Terry the Terrier".
Huddersfield FC has been based at Galpharm Stadium since 1994. The multi-purpose sports ground cost an estimated £40 million to construct and it was awarded the RIBA prize for Building of the Year in 1995. The venue was formerly known as the Alfred McAlpine Stadium, but it was renamed when Galpharm Healthcare took over the sponsorship of the ground. The Terriers share the stadium with the Huddersfield Giants rugby league club. Ken Davy used to be the chairman of both sides simultaneously, but he left Huddersfield Town FC in 2009. The Galpharm stadium regularly hosts international rugby union fixtures and it has also been used as a concert venue for acts such as REM, Bon Jovi and The Eagles.
