Brief History of Leeds United FC
Leeds United formed at the end of 1919, following the disbanding of Leeds City FC. The club enjoyed a golden era under the management of Don Revie between 1961 and 1975. United had been in financial trouble and were approaching relegation to the Third Division, but Revie turned the team around, winning promotion to the top flight in 1964. The side went on to win two league titles, two domestic cups and two Inter-Cities Fairs Cup finals. When Leeds United weren’t winning, they often finished as runners-up. The club came second in the league a total of five times during this period and they also reached the final of the European Cup in 1975. The team was forced to re-build following the departure of Revie and United won the last ever First Division title in 1992. The Premiership began the following season, but this coincided with a dip in the club’s form. Leeds enjoyed success once again at the turn of the century. The club reached the UEFA Cup semi-final in 2000 and made the Champions League semi-final in 2001.
Did you know…
Leeds United FC is also known as “The Whites", due to the colour of the club’s home strip. The team had originally played in blue and white, as there were early plans to merge the side with Huddersfield Town, who also used these colours. These plans were soon overturned and in 1961, Don Revie decided that the team should wear all white in imitation of Real Madrid. Leeds United had earlier been nicknamed “The Peacocks" in reference to the ‘Old Peacock Ground’, which was the former name of Elland Road.
United have played at Elland Road Stadium since the club’s foundation in 1919. It has a capacity of almost 40,000 supporters and features a stand named after Don Revie. The ground has hosted American football, Gaelic football and rugby league fixtures. It has also held international football matches - including several in Euro ’96 - and a variety of rock concerts for acts such as Queen, U2 and the Kaiserchiefs.

The Football Book also features a range of cup ties, including the FA Cup win of 1972 and the wonderful 4-3 victory against Liverpool in the 1992 Charity Shield. Coverage of European competition incorporates the Fairs Cup wins of 1968 and 1971, plus the European Cup final of 1975. There are also some fantastic ties against teams such as Dynamo Zagreb, AC Milan and Besiktas.
