Brief History of Sheffield United FC
Sheffield United FC was founded in 1889 as a means of keeping the Sheffield United cricket club together during the off-season. The move was partly inspired by the FA Cup semi-final of the same year, which was contested between Preston North End and West Bromwich Albion at Bramall Lane. The match produced a huge crowd and thus encouraging gate receipts, so it was hoped that a Sheffield United football team would provide significant revenue during the winter months. Football soon overtook cricket as the most popular sport at the club and Sheffield United FC reached the top flight for the first time in 1893. The Blades went on to enjoy their most successful period between 1895 and 1925. During this era, Sheffield United won the First Division title and twice finished as runners-up in the competition. The club also won four FA Cups. The Blades were relegated in 1934, following thirty-seven consecutive years in the First Division. Sheffield United later won promotion back to the top flight and the club competed in the inaugural Premier League.
Did you know…
Sheffield United cricket club was the first sports side in England to include the word ‘United’ in its name. Since switching to football, the club has been nicknamed “The Blades" in reference to the famous steel industry of the city, which specialises in knives and cutlery. Local rivals Sheffield Wednesday had also been known as the Blades, but they were officially nicknamed “The Owls" in 1899.
Sheffield United FC has played at Bramall Lane Stadium since the club was first formed. The ground has since had numerous redevelopments and extensions and it currently holds a capacity of over 30,000 supporters. Bramall Lane was originally home to Sheffield United cricket club and it also hosted matches for Yorkshire. The stadium is one of only two grounds in England to have been used for international football games, an international cricket test match and the FA Cup final. The only other venue that can boast such a record is The Oval.
